Following on from our recent blog post regarding free or paid VPN it has been announced the the free VPN included in the Opera browser is to be withdrawn.
It's been nearly two years since Opera launched a free VPN built into its browser.
The key thing about Opera VPN was that it was free, with the company promising it would remain free for all Opera users. Well, that has now all changed because Opera has confirmed that the VPN will close down from 30th April 2018.
Opera VPN was a useful tool because it offered a free service, without ads, that let you connect to a selection of countries across the world. They also followed up with an App for iOS and Android. Not bad for a free VPN service you might think. However that's where the problem arises…running a VPN service is not cheap - server costs, bandwidth and customer support are expensive, so even when the company launched the premium paid service ‘Opera VPN Gold’ at $6.49 per month, the service did not get enough subscribers to justify Opera continuing to subsidise the VPN. Bearing in mind our quick and easy to install My Expat Network 12 month single country plans start at just £4.00 ($5.60) per month, we think we offer the best value around for such a high quality reliable service.
If you've been an Opera VPN user and suddenly have to worry about finding yourself a new VPN in the next two weeks, please take a look at our packages and plans.
